GREEDY LOOP beginner's guide: two inputs, one greedy choice

How the tap and the hold work, how creatures and releases score, hearts and horns, and what happens in your first run of Kai's Greedy Loop.

Esta página está disponível em inglês e coreano.

In Kai's Greedy Loop, Kai runs an endless loop of stone, collects creatures, dodges hazards and, sooner or later, falls. The whole game uses two inputs: a tap changes lane, and a hold followed by a release dashes. There is no third button.

Every run asks the same question: how long do you dare to keep your creatures before you let them go? This guide explains both inputs, how the score really works, what a hit costs, and what your first run looks like.

Tap: change lane

A press shorter than 0.24 seconds is a tap, and the lane change happens when your finger lifts. Each tap moves Kai exactly one lane. At the edge lane the direction reverses, so repeated taps sweep back and forth across the road.

Kai starts on 3 lanes, gains a 4th after eating 56 creatures in a run and a 5th after 135. Some later worlds take a lane away, but never below 3.

Hold and release: dash

Hold past 0.24 seconds and the charge starts. The gauge is full about half a second after your finger goes down, and Kai stays charged for as long as you keep holding. Let go before it is full and nothing happens: no dash and no lane change. Kai also does not change lane while you hold.

Releasing a full charge sets every carried creature free, spiralling up around the monument, and launches a head-first dash that breaks hazards in Kai's lane. The dash fires even when you carry no creatures.

Creatures and the line

Running over a creature adds it to the line behind Kai, which holds at most 10. At 10 nothing more can be eaten, the road stops dealing creatures, and Kai shouts RELEASE CREATURES!

55 species can appear: 31 common, 16 rare and 8 legendary.

How the score works

  • Each creature you eat adds its value times the current multiplier to the pot you have not released yet: 1 for a common creature, 2 for a rare one and 5 for a legendary one, doubled while DOUBLE or a BOOST pad is active.
  • The multiplier is 1 plus 0.5 per tier, and you earn a tier for every 12 creatures eaten in the run.
  • A release pays the pot times a release bonus of 1 plus 0.08 per creature eaten since the bonus was last cut, up to x3.6. Every release keeps 34 percent of that build-up.
  • Running scores too: covering ground adds points that grow with your tier.

Creatures you are still carrying when the run ends do not count. Only released points do.

Hearts, horns and walls

A run starts with 2 hearts, one horn plus Kai's head, and can hold 3. Hitting a wall costs one horn, half the carried creatures, half the unreleased pot and 4 percent of the score, followed by 1.25 seconds of protection. With no horn left, the next hit takes Kai's head and ends the run.

Every 100 creatures freed in a run drops a horn pickup on the road ahead, and the corner counter shows how many are left until the next horn.

Your first run

The title screen starts a run with the game's own move: hold until the ring fills, then let go. A first run is a lesson in three beats: tap out of a bumper's lane, hold and release with three creatures, then tap first and hold. No lethal hazards appear while it runs, and HOW TO PLAY has PLAY THE LESSON to repeat it.

Every later run opens with the same 11.2-second stretch of creatures and blue bumpers before the road is dealt at random.

What carries over

Between runs the game keeps your best records, every species you have met and freed, achievements, your ranking name and your chosen secret horn. They are saved to a DOPAPLAY account that starts as an automatic guest the first time you play. Species you have not met show as dark silhouettes on the CREATURES page, and meeting all 55 unlocks three secret horn styles, which are cosmetic only.
