POPCHAIN tips: bigger groups, longer combos, safer jars

Fifteen tips for POPCHAIN built on the real rules: squared group scoring, combo timing, FEVER, bombs, rainbows, chains, stirring, bass speakers, goo and boosters.

These tips follow the actual rules inside POPCHAIN. Three ideas carry most of them: big groups score far more than small ones, a combo needs a steady rhythm of pops, and the dashed line is the only thing that ends a run.

1. Let groups grow before you pop

Points scale with the group size squared, so one group of 9 (810 base points) beats three groups of 3 (270). If a group is about to touch more of its color, wait a moment.

2. Keep pops within 1.6 seconds

Each pop within 1.6 seconds of the last one adds 0.25 to the combo multiplier, up to x4 at combo 13. A pause longer than 1.6 seconds resets it.

3. Never tap blind

A miss resets the combo, drains the FEVER meter and drops extra jellies, and a burst of misses within 2.5 seconds drops even more. A quick look is cheaper than a wrong tap.

4. Fill FEVER by popping a lot

FEVER starts when the jellies you have popped since the last FEVER reach 55 plus 6 times the level. It counts jellies, not speed. FEVER lasts 7 seconds and multiplies every point by 3.

5. Tap all over the jar during FEVER

During FEVER any tap pops the tapped jelly's group plus every colored jelly within about 1.7 jelly widths, even single or frozen jellies. Tap fast across the whole jar.

6. Build big groups before FEVER, not during

Jellies drop faster during FEVER, and no bombs or rainbows form from big groups while it lasts. Set up groups of 7 or more just before it starts.

7. Make bombs and rainbows

A pop of 7 or more leaves a bomb, and a pop of 11 or more leaves a rainbow. Tap a bomb to clear everything around it, and set off two bombs within 0.55 seconds for a bigger blast worth 1.6 times the points. A rainbow pops every jelly of the color it touches most, and a bomb blast that catches a rainbow sets off a color storm that pops the two most common colors in the jar.

8. Pop under a stack for chains

When you pop below a stack, the falling jellies land together. A settling group of 6 or more pops on its own as a CHAIN, up to 4 in a row within 1.6 seconds, and each chain step adds 50 percent. Chain points ignore the combo multiplier, so use chains to clear space, not to farm combos.

9. Spend stirs wisely

You hold up to 3 stir charges and start a run with 1. Each drag through the jar spends one, and any single tap that pops 7 or more jellies earns one back. Story shows with a stir goal start with all 3 and refill one every 4 seconds.

10. Save the bass speaker for close calls

Tap the bass speaker when the pile is near the line. Every jelly jumps, you get 1.8 seconds of grace from overflowing, nearby goo is cleaned, nearby ice thaws, and groups of 5 or more that land together pop on their own.

11. Use paint drops to merge colors

A paint drop takes one of the three most common colors in the jar and dyes up to 7 of the nearest jellies that color when it lands. That can join small groups into one big one, and it turns goo back into jelly.

12. Deal with goo and ice early

Goo cannot be tapped, and it spreads to a neighbor about every 5.5 seconds, up to 8. Clean it by popping a jelly next to it, with a bomb or with a bass drop. Frozen jellies ignore taps outside FEVER: pop a jelly right next to them, or use a bass drop, a rainbow or FEVER to thaw them.

13. Go for clutch saves and perfect clears

Pulling the pile back below the line after it has sat above it for more than 1 second pays a CLUTCH bonus of 750 plus 250 times the level. Clearing the jar down to 2 jellies or fewer pays a 5,000-point perfect clear.

14. Know your boosters

Boosters cost coins, and you can get one free booster for a rewarded ad every 6 minutes. Each is used at most once per run, and only when you tap it.

  • Bomb (250 coins): slows time to just over half while you aim
  • 2X Score (300 coins): doubles points for 30 seconds
  • Shield (400 coins): saves you once from an overflow, automatically
  • Booster box (2,200 coins): 3 of each

15. Finish story goals early, play safe in Today's Show

In Story, finishing the goals early pays more: during ENCORE each second left is worth 80 points and each jelly left 30, growing by 25 percent per world up to world 8. In Today's Show only the score matters for stars and there is no revive, so keep the pile low; your best of three tries counts.
